Grenada

General Information about Grenada

Grenada is located in the Caribbean and consists of three main islands; Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique as well as many other tiny islands. Grenada has an estimated population of 90,000 people and is the western hemisphere's second-smallest independant nation. Grenada is the spice capital of the world and produces many spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger. The official language spoken in Grenada is English but some French dialects are sometimes spoken. Over 50% of the Grenadian population are Roman Catholic. Other main religions followed are Anglican and Protestant. Grenada's capital city St George's lies on the Grenada Island which is the largest and most populated of Grenada's islands.

Fort George above the town of St George is a popular tourist spot. This fort was built in 1705 by the French and is Grenada's oldest fort. It offers wonderful views of St George town. The main touist area is Grand Anse Beach on the western side of Grenada. Here there are many hotels, restaurants and bars. The water at Grand Anse Beach is clear and is perfect for scuba-diving and other watersports.

Grenada experiences a tropical type climate with two main seasons through out the year. The dry season begins in January and continues through up until May with conditions being tempered by the trade winds. During the wet season the weather is more hot and humid which begins in June right up until December. November is the wettest month to visit with annual averages of up to 60 inches in the norhtern and southern coastal parts and 150 inches in the the central highlands. The annual average temperature sits between 24 and 30 degrees.

Grenada which is set between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic ocean is a small island group with a area of 344 square kilometres and a coastline of just over 121 kilometres. Found to the North of Grenada is Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela and in the south is Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Grenada belongs to the Grenadines group which is a chain of over 600 islets with the islets south of the Martinique Channel belonging to Grenada. Grenada is of volcanic origin with as many as five volcanoes and is filled with mountains particulary in the central regions. The highest point of Grenada is known as Mount Saint Catherine and rises to over 840 metres . Mount Saint Catherine has several lava domes and is the youngest volcanoe of the island with a horseshoe shaped crater. The lowest point of Grenada is the Caribbean Sea at sea level.

The tourism industry is the main source of income for Grenada with many visitors heading to the southwest island to visit the some of the picturesque beaches in the world. Grenada is also known around the globe as being a leading producer of spices and is often referred to as The Spice Isle. Over 20 percent of the world's supply of spices originates from Grenada as well as many other spices such as cinnamon, cloves, ginger, mace, allspice, and orang and citrus peels. Nutmeg is the leading spice of Grenada and is also the world's second largest producer after Indonesia. The most important industry trades are food and beverages, textiles, light assembly operations, tourism and construction. The official currency of Grenada is the East Caribbean Dollar.
