General Information about Quito

Quito which is the capital city of Ecuador is officially known as San Francisco de Quito and is situated along the Guayllabamba river basin in north central Ecuador. The city of Quito is at an elevation of 2,743 metres and is the second highest capital in the world. Quito has been inhabited since as far back as 980 CE and is home to approximately two million people.

There are many interesting sights to see while you are at Quito with a variety of museums and parks that are worth visiting. Museo del Banco Central is one of the most popular museums to visit at Quito with its extensive range of exhibitions this museum is a real treat to fans of Ecuadorian history.

Visiting Quito would not be complete without visiting the old town of the city which is known as Centro Historico. Here you will find a fine selection of monasteries, churches, as well as South America's largest building of the Colonial era which is the Metropolitan Cathedral.

For fantastic sightseeing a trip on the Teleferico cable car is a must. Teleferico is the second highest cable car in the world and offers some amazing views of the city and surrounding regions.
