General Information about Guayaquil

Guayaquil which was originally known as Muy Noble y Muy Leal Ciudad de Santiago de Guayaquil when the city was first inhabited in 1538. Found within the province of Guayas, Guayaquil is home to over 1,985,400 residents making it the most populated city in Ecuador.

The city is ideally located along the Guayas River which is one South America's main rivers which is approximately 389 kilometres in length. Well known as a sea port the city of Guayaquil is close neighbours with Cuenca and Machala.

There are many interesting things to see and do while you are visiting Guayaquil with the Mercado Artesanal being an extremely popular artisan market, featuring over 240 stores. The Palacio Municipal and the Malecon 2000 are two of the city's most visited attractions both located near each other, near the Simon Bolivar Pier.

The best time to visit Guayaquil for ideal weather is between May and December, if you are visiting between January and April you will come across some extreme weather conditions. You can either choose to travel to Guayaquil via plane, bus or car. There are regular flights landing at the Jose Joaquin de Olmedo International Airport with many taxis waiting at the airport to transfer you to your accommodation.
