he official language spoken in Ecuador is Spanish, though many Amerindian languages such as Quechua are also spoken. 95% of Ecuadorians are Roman Catholic. The capital city of Ecuador is Quito in the central north of the nation near the Andes Mountains and is home to more than 1.8 million people. The largest city in Ecuador is Guayaquil which lies to the west of the Guayas River and has a population of more than 2.1 million people.
The most famous thing about Ecuador is it's location, right on the Equator. This is how the country got it's name. At the centre of the La Mitad del Mundo lies a 30m high monument to celebrate the nations location. Ecuador's oldest church, the Monastery of San Francisco which was completed in 1600. This is the oldest colonial structure in Quito's and has an attatched museum with artifacts dating back to the 16th century. The Monastery of Santa Catalina in Quito was founded in 1592 and is still a fully functional convent and monastery. The nuns inside spend 5 years in solitary confinement cells and afterwards are only allowed to talk (or watch TV these days) for one hour. There are many gruesome religious 18th century paintings inside and it is said that Santa Catalina has secret underground tunnels that connect it to the church of Santa Domingo. Apartments in Ecuador
