Costa Rica

General Information about Costa Rica

Costa Rica is located in Central America and is bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the south, the Caribbean Sea to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Costa Rica is a small nation yet has a population over over 4,100,000 people and attracts over one million visitors per year. Costa Rica is divided into 7 provinces; Alajuela,Cartago,Guanacaste, Heredia, Limón, Puntarenas and San José. The official language spoken in Costa Rica is Spanish but English is also widely understood. Almost 92% of the Costa Rican population are Christian and Roman Catholicism is the official state religion. There are also some Protestant minorities. Costa Rica's capital and largest city is San Jose which is situated in the centre of the country.

Costa Rica has many national parks and one-third of the nation has been made protected areas by the authorities so there is an abundance of beautiful plants and animals to see. San Jose has many museums such as the Museo de Jade, Museo de los Niños & Galería Nacional and Museo de Oro Precolombino y Numismática to visit. The Museo de Oro Precolombino y Numismática is the three-in-one museum and houses many artifacts including pre-Columbian gold.

All year round Costa Rica has a tropical climate as the country is located about eight degrees north of the equator. The dry season, Verano (Summer) runs from December to April and is follwed by the wet season, Invierno (Winter) between May and November. In many places in Costa Rica it rains constantly during Invierno. The northeast slopes of the Central Cordillera Mountains recieve the most rain. Here the average annual rainfall is over 5,000 millimetres. Temperature in Costa Rica varies according to elevation rather than season. The average temperature is 21° celsius on the Caribbean side of the country.

Costa Rica is located in Central America between the North Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea and two land borders, Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south. The Costa Rican terrain is mainy made of coastal plains which are seperated by mountains, including over 100 volcanic cones and several major volcanoes. Costa Rica also has many islands such as Cocos Island and the larger Calero Island. The highest point in Costa Rica is at the peak of Cerro Chirripó.

The Costa Rican economy heavily depends on tourism as well as agriculture and electronical exports. Costa Rica is generally known for it's exportations of coffee and bananas but pineapples, melons, plants, sugar, corn, rice, beans and beef also play a major role. There are also many industries in Costa Rica including food processing, clothing, construction materials and plastic products. During the 1990's tourism overtook agriculture as the nations main dependency. Tourism now earns more foreign exchange than bananas and coffee combined.
