In the 19th century Mount Everest was known as Deodungha or 'Holy Mountain' by the local Darjeeling language Mount Everest is an astronomical size of 8,848 metres and can take as long as twenty-one days to climb on a three month expedition. Many locals in China believe that Mount Everest should be referred to with its original name of Mount Qomolangma. On the opposite end of the spectrum the lowest point in China is Turpan Pendi which is located in north west China at 154 metres below sea level. The agricultural industry employs over 50 percent of the population. Despite this it only contributes 14 percent to China's economy, due to much of the China continuing to loose arable land due to erosion. China faces the problem of being a rapidly aging country due to its 'one child' policy which could become a long term threat to the economy.
