Jingjiang Princes City is one of the best known historical sites in Guilin. Construction on the royal complex began in 1372, during the Ming Dynasty and was ordered under Hong Wu. Jingjiang Princes City was once the inner city of Guilin and home to the Princes of China and their families. The complex consists of four halls, four pavillions and forty other structures. Since the first enthroned Prince of Jingjiang there have been 14 princes from 12 generations who have lived here. Today Jingjiang Princes City is also home to the Guangxi Normal University.
Locally known as Xiangbi Shan is Elephant Trunk Hill, one of the most recognised symbols of Guilin. Elephant Trunk Hill is situated in the south of Guilin on the west bank of the Lijang River and looks like an elephant dipping it's trunk into the river. Chinese legend says that an elephant belonging to the Emperor of Heaven came to earth to help the people with their work. This angered the Emperor so he stabbed the elephant as he bent down to take a drink and turned him into stone. The cave between the body and the trunk of the 'elephant' has inspired many poets who have engraved verses on the walls. Majority of these are from the Song Dynasty, from 960 to 1279.
