Siem ReapGeneral Information about Siem ReapThe name Siem Reap translates in English to mean Defeat of Siam - which is now known as Thailand, and commemorates the Khmer victory over the neighbouring country. The city is located in the central north of Cambodia and situated along the Siem Reap River. Siem Reap is also the capital city of Siem Reap Province, and the fastest growing city in Cambodia with a population of more than 139,400 people.
Although it is often seen as just the gateway to the Angkor UNESCO World Heritage Site, Siem Reap has many interesting attractions of it's own right such as the Cambodia Land Mine Museum, Psar Chaa, Central Market and Wat Bo. Still, the most popular places to visit in Siem Reap are in the Angkor part of the city and include the Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and other Angkor temples.
The Angkor UNESCO World Heritage Site features Angkor Wat, the most visited site in Siem Reap. The wat is the southernmost of the Angkor temples, and is also the most recognised landmark of Cambodia, as it is symbolised on the nation's flag. The Angkor Wat was constructed in the early 12th century for King Suryavarman II as his state temple and capital city. This is the best preserved temple in the area and is the only temple to have remained an important religious centre.
Wat Bo is one of the oldest temples in Siem Reap, yet is still considered modern in comparison to those of Angkor. This highly respected pagoda was founded at the turn of the 18th century and contains a collection of antique 19th century wall paintings of the Reamker.
