General Information about Barbados

Barbados is a small independant island nation in the Caribbean Sea in the West Atlantic Ocean. Barbados is sometimes referred to as the 'Little England' of the Caribbean because of it's long association with the United Kingdom. Barbados has a population of 279,000 people and has one of the highest literacy rates and standards of living in the world. English is the official language spoken in Barbados and most Bajan people belong to Anglican or other Protestant religions. Barbados is roughly divided into five districts; Bridgetown, Central Barbados, Eastern Barbados, Western Barbados and Southern Barbados. Bridgetown is also the capital city of Barbados and over half of the country's population live here.

Scuba-diving and snorkelling are very popular activities in Barbados. There are many coral reefs that feature shipwrecks and a variety of marine life such as seahorses, turtles, eels and frogfish. Barbados has over a thousand rum bars as Barbados wa the birthplace of Rum so taste tests are popular. Barbados also has museums and wildlife parks to explore.

Barbados experiences a tropical climate with temperatures rarely falling below 30 degrees. Barbados has two main seasons throughout the year of a wet and dry season. December through to May are the best months to visit as these are the dry months. June through to November are the wet months with averages of up to 60 inches. If you are planning on visiting during this period then you should take extra care as hurricane's are common particulary along the southern border.

Found in the North Atlantic Ocean just north east of Venezuela, Barbados is a small island with an area just over 430 square kilometres. The coastline of Barbados extends for over 97 kilometres and filled with many beautiful beaches as well as many amazing coral reefs. The terrain of Barbados is mostly flat which rises gently to a central highland region. The highest point of Barbados is known as Mount Hillaby and rises to over 336 metres. Mount Hillaby can be found near the parish of Saint Andrew. The lowest point of Barbados is the Atlantic Ocean at sea level. Barbados is split into eleven parishes with Saint Michael being the main city and capital.

Traditionaly the economy of Barbados was centred around the sugarcane industry but has since developed other industries particulary the tourism industry. Barbados has a well educated workforce and is focuses strongly on foreign investment as well as the reduction of its enemployment levels. The main industries of Barbados are sugar, tourism, light manufacturing, and component assembly for export. Barbados has a low agricultural industry with the main produces being sugarcane, vegetables, and cotton. Barbados mainly exports sugar and molasses, rum, chemicals and electrical components. The official currency of Barbados is the Bardadian Dollar.
